なんだっけ (nandakke) is probably the phrase I hear most in Japan as an English-speaking person. It’s used when trying to remember something. In the context of a Japanese person speaking English with me, it’s like saying, “What’s that word (I’m looking for)?”
As someone barely scratching the surface of Japanese, I feel like this all the time. I never know the word I need.
I ask なんで (nande, why) a lot. I always want to know why.
When I discover why something is the way it is, I add it to my note of おもしろい (omoshiroi, interesting / funny) words and phrases to remember. This blog is my way to share those things with you.
